Faculty Speaker Series 07-08 Kick-off : Ian Macmillan
Prof. Ian MacMillan led a lively discussion on social entrepreneurship, contending that social ventures that seek to make a profit should form the backbone of future international development efforts. He criticized current models of foreign aid, which often promote a tin-cup dependency that can be detrimental to the development prospects of the aid recipient. To illustrate his point, he outlined examples of pilot entrepreneurial projects started through the Wharton Sol C. Snider Entrepreneurial Research Center, including an animal feed project in Zambia, an HIV anti-retroviral therapy monitoring system in Botswana, and a cookie factory employing women from a township in Cape Town, South Africa. His hope is to build these projects to scale, and then replicate them not only across other parts of the Third World, but even here in the United States.
